The Getaway

Honzo December 23rd, 2005

As of four thirty this afternoon, I am off work until the New Year.
What do I plan accomplishing? A whole list of non-nerdy stuff:

  1. Spend time with other humans
    • Meredith’s Family from South Africa, Versailles, Israel, Chi-Town, and Little Rock
    • My Family from Ashland, KC, and Versailles
    • QT
time with Meredith - We have both been pretty busy since Thanksgiving
and we are setting aside each evening to just be together with nothing
      to do.
  2. Set up a local server - Jeremiah is donating a old, old computer to me and I plan to play around with Linux, apache, ect… without messing up my computer or hundiejo.com
  3. Optimize my brother and parent’s computers. I think most of you know all about this…
  4. Post to philosophy
and theology blogs. I hope to have some peaceful time to sit down and
think through some things. Smijer has provided me some start up
    material for Mass Theology
  5. V-V-Video games - I don’t have school or work and Grant does not have school and neither do his friends… Lan Party anyone?
  6. Read
up on philosophy. I have some reading to do - Lewis, John Rawls, some
Christian medieval theologians, it should be some good times.

I am excited. Right now, I am posting this from my parent’s front
porch. The weather is cool it is dark, I am out in the country, it
overlooks a wooded area, and there is a slight breeze; it is quite
nice. I am waiting for Meredith to get here so we can do our Christmas.

Peace out and praise the Lord for providing a way out of the sins that we have committed. Jesus Christ is Lord.

I prefer MapQuest - That is a good one too

The Chronic WHAT? cles of Narnia!

Check out this hillarious (and good sounding) clip from SNL called
the SNL - The Chronic of Narnia Rap. It reminds me of the Beastie Boys.
Best line?

You can call us Aaron Burr the way we are dropping Hamiltons.

Update: This is the clip Eric was looking for.

Bonafide Media Bias Proven… or not.

Honzo December 21st, 2005

Press Release: Media Bias Is Real, Finds UCLA Political Scientist

Paper: A MEASURE OF MEDIA BIAS by Tim Groseclose and Jeffrey Milyo (PDF)

Graphical Representation: Media Tilts Left

I am in the middle of reading the paper, so far it is interesting. Here is the abstract:

We measure media bias by estimating ideological scores for several major media outlets. To compute this, we
count the times that a particular media outlet cites various think
tanks and policy groups, then compare this with the times that members
of Congress cite the same groups
. Our results show a strong
liberal bias: all of the news outlets we examine, except Fox News’
Special Report and the Washington Times, received scores to the left of
the average member of Congress. Consistent with claims made by
conservative critics, CBS Evening News and the New York Times received
scores far to the left of center. The most centrist media outlets were
PBS NewsHour, CNN’s Newsnight, and ABC’s Good Morning America; among
print outlets, USAToday was closest to the center. All of our findings
refer strictly to news content; that is, we exclude editorials,
letters, and the like.

Update: When I first read about the study, I questioned the Drudge Report and the WSJ as being among the most liberal news outlets. Dave echoed this same sentiment, just more articulately and in depth.

Update II: Check out what Media Matters has to say about the study: Former fellows at conservative think tanks issued flawed UCLA-led study on media’s “liberal bias”

Update III: Check out what else Dave has to say about it: “New” Media Bias Study

New Group Blog - Theology for the Masses

Honzo December 21st, 2005

A few people I know have started a group theology blog called Theology for the Masses. The authors are:

The goal is to get a varried range of imput from Christians on
theological matters. Everything should be covered from the purely
academic, such as the nature of the trinity; to more practical matters,
like the day to day actions of a Christian. We have some liberal and
conservative writers, but we expect things will be in a civil tone. If you know anyone that would like to be added to the author’s list, please let me know.

Kobe hits a few shots

Kobe Bryant scored 62 points last night… by the third quarter! When he left the game he had scored more than the Mavs!

I hate the guy, but man, that is impressive.

Pushing the Limits Of Wartime Powers

I don’t like this:

On occasion the Bush administration has explicitly
rejected the authority of courts and Congress to impose boundaries on
the power of the commander in chief, describing the president’s
war-making powers in legal briefs as “plenary” — a term defined as
“full,” “complete,” and “absolute.”

I know they filled in four members of congress from both parties.
Graham of Florida said that the administration just told him that they
were having a change in technology, not a change in policy.

Is Graham covering his butt on this one? The article brings up two points that suggest he is:

Why would we have a meeting in the vice president’s
office to talk about a change and then tell the members of Congress
there is no change?”

and

The high-ranking intelligence official, who spoke with
White House permission but said he was not authorized to be identified
by name, said Graham is “misremembering the briefings,” which in fact
were “very, very comprehensive.” The official declined to describe any
of the substance of the meetings, but said they were intended “to make
sure the Hill knows this program in its entirety, in order to never,
ever be faced with the circumstance that someone says, ‘I was briefed
on this but I had no idea that — ‘ and you can fill in the rest.”

This whole issue concerns me greatly. I can’t articulate my position
on it. Partly because I don’t have all the facts and partly because I
might have done the same thing.

Yup. That is right. Someone actually searched for a template for a

GRE

Honzo December 12th, 2005

I took the GRE today. I got a 560 in Verbal, a 5.0 in Analytical
Writing, and 690 in Quantitative. I lucked out on the Analytical
Writing topics. Not that I can talk to you about them - I had to sign
away all rights to bitch about them. (he he) They even made me use
cursive to write out this paragraph where I promised not to let out any
of the secret test questions. Yes, cursive, the script that no one
outside three professions uses. That was seriously the hardest part of
my day.

I still hate the Verbal Section. I can handle the analogies and the
fill in the blank. The antonyms section is filled with words that
absolutely none uses… ever. While I cannot mention any of the
specifics, (see above for why) I did come across about 20 words that I
had never seen before. Notice I am saying, I did not know what they
meant, I had never seen them in print or heard them spoken in 19 years
of schooling. And apparently these are words that I need to know so
badly that they are on a test that helps determine my future.

Anyway, I don’t really know how I did. According to GRE Online Guide from wordhacker.com and the “Interpreting Your GRE Scores
(PDF) from the GRE website, I did ok. I did score above the mean of the
general testing public. I also did better in Verbal and Analytical
Writing than the mean in each of the “Broad Intended Graduate Major
Fields”. I out preformed all of the fields with the exception of
physical sciences and engineering in teh Quantitative Reasoning section.

Update: I recieved my Analytical Writing score.

Stan VanGundy steps down.

Honzo December 12th, 2005

Source: Heat Coach Resigns

No way. It is as has been predicted. Stan Van Gundy is stepping down
as coach of the Heat. I wonder how fast Riley will jump to coach Shaq.

This was from John Hollinger back on October 4th of 2005 from Espn Insider:Heat overview: How hot is Stan’s seat, Pat?

Pat Riley’s halfhearted defense of coach Stan Van Gundy
in the offseason has Miami-area Kremlinologists speculating about an
impending coup.

Riley stepped down just two years ago when it seemed the Heat were
beyond saving and has quickly revitalized the team by focusing on his
front-office role. But Riley has been slow to rule out a return to the
bench and might feel that he could have had Miami in the Finals a year
ago. This is ridiculous, of course: Van Gundy had the team massively
overachieving on defense and squeezed every drop out of players like
Damon Jones and Udonis Haslem. But as team president, it’s Riley’s call.

Adding to the intrigue is all the problem personalities Riley picked
up in the offseason. All four key acquisitions — Walker, Williams,
Posey and Payton — have a reputation for being a burr in their coach’s
saddle. That has some wondering if Riley is intentionally engineering a
difficult locker room situation so that the Heat struggle out of the
gate — especially since Riley already undermined Van Gundy’s authority
with his shenanigans over the summer.

Under this scenario, Riley could fax Van Gundy his walking papers at
midseason, ride in and save the day without being perceived as a bad
guy.

And now he is gone…

In an interesting side note, over at ESPN.com they are voting about the issue. Check out the replies to this question:

9) Who do you think was the worst offseason addition?

42.8% Antoine Walker
21.6% Gary Payton
15.4% Jason Williams
14.9% They were all good additions
5.2% James Posey

Israel - Land and Air attack on Iran?

Honzo December 12th, 2005

Heard from the Environmental Republican that Israel might be gearing up to attack Iran by land and air.

That would be pretty bold. TankerTodd from RedState.org thinks that there is an Impending Israeli-Iran War and cites an article from the Times that says that the deadline for a preemptive attack on Iran’s nuke sites is March, about the same time as the Israeli elections.

Things a bit warm in here?

More Bush Admin Grades

Honzo December 12th, 2005

voluntaryXchange: Grade Inflation, Media Bias and Economic Growth

Using this scale - which, mind you, is how your kids are
being judged in college - Bush grades out with 10 A’s in a row, and a
3.1 GPA for his entire administration (including the recession). For
what it’s worth, Clinton never did better than 6 A’s in a row using
this scale.

Now, I don’t partake too seriously of this grading scale, but it
does illustrate how the economy is doing on a scale that is familiar to
most people.

According to the above linked post, the Bush Admin, while failing in Homeland Security Recomendations, gets a 3.1 GPA in Economics, with 10 A’s in a row! Not sure how accurate it is, but interesting none the less.
