A Civil Solution to the Gay Marriage Issue.

Honzo July 29th, 2005

Right now in our nation we are in a disagreement when it comes to
gays being allowed to marry. We have several different camps of wildly
varying opinions.

It is difficult to form a good narrative that incorporates my
thoughts on this issue. So, instead of a good flowing post, you shall
get the cursed outline of my basic thoughts on the issue:

  1. Government “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof1. In other words, the government should stay out of religious matters.
  2. Marriage is a religious term in origin.
  3. Civil Unions are non-religious government made legal arrangements that provide the same protections and rights as a marriage.
  4. There is no reason that two consenting adults should not be able to engage in a civil union.
    Examples:

    • A gay couple trying to build a life together.
    • An unmarried brother and sister in a platonic relationship trying to make ends meet.
    • Two
best friends in a similar relationship so they can visit each other in
the hospital, be on each other’s insurance, raise a child ect…
  5. Despite all my trying otherwise, I cannot think that on a religious
level, marriage should be anything but between a man and a wife.
  6. Different religious institutions have varying opinions on this subject.

In light of the above, perhaps a compromise is in order. What if we
took marriage completely away from the government? The government
should make civil unions for all couples of all degrees - Heterosexual,
Homosexual, and Platonic. Leave marriage as solely a religious
denotation.

Under this idea, if a couple wanted the legal protections and rights
currently associated with marriage they would get a civil union from
the government. If they wanted a formal denotation of being married,
they get that from a church or other religious organization. When it
comes to the sex issue, have the government butt out of the lives of
consenting adults - we have bigger fish to fry.

Think that will work? I would love to hear feedback.

Dude, I’m in agreeance as Mr. Durst would say.

Actually that makes some sense. I think we can all agree, however, that
the light text on white background for comments is almost impossible to
read. Other than that I really like this evoskin. Did you make it from
scratch? You should submit it to the skin repository: skins.b2evolution.net.

    Danny,

I did not see that yesterday. I took Agility and modded it for 2 hours
last night when I should have been sleeping. I’ll try to fix it when I
    get a chance.

yea…this has been what Roland has been saying forever. And to an extent I agree with it.

The problem is that I do not see the government ever getting out of the
marriage business. While I believe that this solution could work, I
don’t believe it is necessarily a realistic solution.

Just like the fair tax, it is a better way to go, but seems unrealistic that anything would get done.

However, slavery seemed that way at one time too. If it is the best thing to do, I wanna keep pressing for it.

Fair Tax? Umm…no. But I don’t think we really need to bring that up again.

I plan to do some reading on it and then reintroduce the topic in about
    month or so.

From a government perspective, you grandfather all existing marriages
(hexero and homo) into the civil union program. That is all the
government would need to do and all you would need to do for the
    government.

From the couple’s point of view, they would need to arrange the
religious denotation with their religious sect of choice. It would be
up to them to decide how to proceed.

come across anything written by anyone that actually expressed my
views. I found your page via Google. I am writing a paper for an
upper-division writing class on gay marriage. Would you mind if I cited
your blog? Preferably you could e-mail me and let me know. Thanks so
    much!
