What the crap? Why Wonder Woman? Why not Superman? Is this an attack on women? No. After a bit of digging, it looks like the ad comes from the AIDES foundation, a french anti-AIDS organization. They also have one picturing Superman with AIDS. Taken as a whole, I think they are pretty effective. Its easy to say to oneself that I won’t get AIDS, it does not affect me, it only hurts those that deserve it ( it’s punishment from God, right? ). I think it’s pretty effective. Ok, so it’s because of magic that these cats can dare to challenge Supes; whatever, I’ll take a placeholder to try out his laser vision and ice breath. If am looking for mindless fighting game, one that lets me use DC characters will get my vote. I have no pretension that I am getting any kind of masterful story telling or canonriffic powers. Sometimes I like to eat straight sugar.
A. Star Wars: The Clone Warswas fun. Really, really fun. Don’t believe the naysayers. Just go in expecting a good pilot episode for the new TV series and you will leave pleasantly surprised. Tropic Thunder? See here for an echo of my thoughts.
B. Star Wars the Force Unleashed is coming out soon. Woot. Woot. and Hip, hip, hooray.
Thesis chapter three rough draft on which I am working is on the left, with endnote chumming along in the lower-right corner topped off with the pilot episode of Firefly on top of it. Good times.
The Dark Knight — A Philosophical Review via Christus Victor Ministries » Greg Boyd (Gregory A. Boyd) by gregboyd – This is good on two levels. One, it is a nice talk about the relationship between Harvey, Batman, and the Joker (though it would have be bolstered if he had included how Gordon fits in there). Two, well, let’s just say that Boyd called Harvey the “chief commissioner” and there was mention (before the edits) of Keith Ledger.

Lots o’ people have been down on Will Smith’s Hancock. The collective over at Rotten Tomatoes have given it a 36% freshness rating, which translates into a 63% rotten rating.
Meredith and I went with the suddenly single JR (his girlfriend just left to go to El Salvador for a few weeks) to see Hancock last night (after an excellent time with Nathan and Marcy at Chuck E. Cheese). I went in with low, low expectations and I left really enjoying the movie. I came in expecting the tale to just deal with Hancock learning how to be a hero and not an "asshole.” (I’ll go ahead and say it one more time: “asshole.”) I wondered all the way to the theater how they were going to do that for a solid two hours. Additionally, I had already seen how they go about fixing that problem (jail time until they beg him to come out). Lastly, I had seen zilch about a villian – who is he gonna fight once he has achieved hero status?
While the above was a prominent portion of the story and done reasonably well, it was the rest of the movie that really did it for me. They were able to give a fresh telling of a hero’s origin story as well as do a decent job with his antagonist. Watching the end of the movie reminded me of watching the end of Unbreakable, which was the best movie that the scourge-that-shall-not-be-named has made. It was that high of quality hero-telling.

Whilst I am talking about superhero movies, I really wanna check out Special staring Michael Rapaport. It is about a dude who “leads a painfully unremarkable life as a metermaid until he enrolls in a drug study for an experimental anti-depressant. An unexpected side effect of the drug convinces him that he is developing special powers and must quit his job to answer his new calling in life…” It came out in 2006, but has yet to be released here in the states. You can buy it in the UK, however, which I might do.
