The Showme State

My buddy Jake sent me this.  I thought it was hilarious1 and I know immediately that I had to share it with Danny.

Roman/American Myth - Why Not?

The more I learn in the specific about how Rome shifted from a imperial1 republic into an empire and how much we patterned our institutions off of the Romans, I cannot understand why we have not incorporated the Fall of the Roman Republic into our cautionary myths. I’d be a complex myth to be sure, but you could build all kinds of ideological warnings in there.

After all, we and the Romans shared the same hatred of the “Tyrant.” We both have erected power sharing systems to prevent the Tyrant from coming to power.

You could highlight Julian’s skirting of the Roman “constitution” during his rise to power and how Octavian was able to slyly consolidate power while not ever upsetting the consuls and not ever appearing to be a monarch.

I think the Star War’s prequals come the closest to mythologizing the end of the Roman Republic. As flat and as poorly executed it was at times, I still love the line, “So this is how liberty dies… with thundering applause.2

  1. they were an empire far before they had an emperor… wait… CRAP! []
  2. or something similar []

I’m Going down to Branson, Gonna have myself a Time

My uncle Dwight obtained two condos for this weekend to celebrate my g-ma’s 88th birthday. Meredith and I don’t really have the time to go down there, but we are going to anyway. It should be allota fun.  I think now we are traveling every weekend but one this month after traveling every weekend but one last month.

Gas, Gas, go away; go up in price another day; Henry needs to drive today.

I am pretty excited about it.  Not only will we get to hang out with my uncles, parents, and grandmother; but Hank and Q will be down there as well.  Is that a secret invasion discussion I smell?

Only trick is, we have to be back for Meredith to teach Sunday School.

Cracked’s 10 Facebook Commandments

As a certified grumpy old man, this tickled me a bit: Cracked’s 10 Facebook Commandments.  A sampling:

There are thousands of apps available on Facebook, and although there are a few worth checking out, about 99.9% of them suck. A reasonably intelligent person should be able to tell the difference. If you can’t figure out which is which, maybe Facebook isn’t the place for you. Perhaps another social networking site would suit you better?

1 in 50 Million ain’t bad

The Large Hadron Collider is spooling up as I type and as you read this.  Some peoples are scared to death that this giant magnetic doughnut underground in Europe will destroy the earth and are trying to stop it via lawsuits.  Some other people deal interact with this possibility through humorous writing.  For those of you whose eyebrows raise at the headlines but don’t have PhD’s in physics, there be dragons: Wired :: Large Hadron Collider: Best- and Worst-Case Scenarios.

Pictured : The Destruction of the Klingon moon Praxis.  Lets hope nothing like that happens when we spool up the ole LHC for something and giggles.

Growing on me… (MK vs DC)

See more gamer videos at PWN or DIE

Ok, so it’s because of magic that these cats can dare to challenge Supes; whatever, I’ll take a placeholder to try out his laser vision and ice breath.  If am looking for mindless fighting game, one that lets me use DC characters will get my vote.  I have no pretension that I am getting any kind of masterful story telling or canonriffic powers.  Sometimes I like to eat straight sugar.
